Drifting Need Not Be An Expensive Hobby
Before you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on that purpose-built turbo-charged rear-wheel drive drift car, understand that drifting need not be an expensive hobby. Yes, horsepower matters but power is not the only thing to help you succeed in drifting.
At the drift venue, you will find midrange sports cars like the Nissan 240SX and Subaru BRZ. What matters is the mental approach you adopt when learning to drift. In fact, drifting will be more enjoyable when you’re learning in a midrange car than when navigating an extremely fast, high-end car that you may not control well.
Get A Proper Set Of Equipment
It is important to have a decent of set of equipment when drifting. While we certainly do not advise getting the most expensive set of wheels, tyres, suspension and brakes, one should not save on them either. Get something affordable but decent enough for what you need. For example, front tyres should have deeper threads but rear tyres ought to have rigid sidewalls with shallower threads. The brakes should be reactive and firm enough to allow you to brake when you need to, so that you don’t understeer or oversteer along bends.
There is a saying that goes, “Oversteer scares passengers. Understeer scares drivers.” Drifting should be enjoyable, not stressful! The idea is to have the optimal set of equipment on your car that allows you to drift effortlessly, yet safely.

There is absolutely no need to learn drifting all by yourself. There’s only so much you can learn from watching YouTube videos and driving alone.
